Notes of Interest:

In honor of the Fourth of July, the British are having a difficult time declaring their independence from Lycos. As always, a large number of Lycos searches come from the United Kingdom and this week, several British subjects make themselves known on The Lycos 50. Wimbledon (#9) landed in the top ten for the first time while searches for Barbara Schett, shy of making the top 50, more than tripled this week. Schett, the 25-year-old Austrian tennis player, lost in the third round to tour hottie Jelena Dokic. A British tennis magazine poll recently named Schett the sexiest woman on the WTA Tour, even above tennis darling Anna Kournikova (#21). Another British story causing waves online involves the James Bulger killers (#28). Eight years ago, Liverpool toddler James Bulger was kidnapped and murdered by two ten-year-old children, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson. The two convicted murderers, now 18, were granted release according to British law on June 22, resulting in the anger and threat of vigilante action throughout the U.K. Venables and Thompson were given new identities and the British courts slapped a lifetime injunction on any U.K. media outlets reporting on the murderers' whereabouts. But the courts cannot prevent information from being placed on the Internet in other countries and through non-British search engines (including Lycos).

Furiouser and Furiouser:

The Fast and the Furious peaked at the box office this past weekend, as predicted by The Lycos 50 two months ago, propelling the film to number seven on this week's list. The racing action of Furious drives many of the searches, resulting in several queries for Fast and the Furious cars. Searches for street racing tripled and break out star of the film, actor Vin Diesel continues his dash to superstardom, entering The Lycos 50 at number 31.

Pound Foolish:

As usual, searches for minor celebrities explode in the face of controversy. In true Robert Blake tradition, this week's winner, or loser, is comedienne Paula Poundstone (#23). Last week, Poundstone was charged with allegedly sexually molesting her 14-year-old adopted daughter and endangering her four other adopted and foster care children, sending Lycos users scrambling for more information on the sordid details.
