In 1980, he joined GD Searle as European Medical Director, becoming Senior Vice President of Medical Research in Chicago following the acquisition of Searle by Monsanto. In 1991, he joined SmithKline Beecham, shortly thereafter becoming Senior Vice President for Worldwide Development, with managerial responsibility for over 2,000 people based in the USA, UK and Japan. He retired in May 1999. Dr Nicholson has stepped down from his role as Chairman of British Biotech's Safety Review Board and has been replaced by Dr Robert Smith, formerly Director of Medical Affairs, Glaxo Group Research Ltd.
