British American Tobacco, the world's second largest manufacturer of tobacco products, set out in 2001 to take over the distribution of its products to its customers in Hungary. As part of a larger strategic initiative to optimize distribution to end-markets and strengthen its market leadership, BAT chose Descartes to help plan and balance route delivery operations.

Within 60 days British American Tobacco was using Descartes through the creation of over 300 territories and 3,000 distribution routes. Optimized delivery operations enabled British American Tobacco to drive sales through the improved ability to deliver to more customers using fewer delivery vehicles.

With Descartes Routing and Scheduling, BAT is addressing a number of the company's key planning challenges often associated with businesses with direct delivery requirements The stipulation that requires that an item of materiel must be delivered in the total quantity required by the date required. . Large order delivery loads, delivery density and frequency and the affect on efficiency if depot or customer locations change are just some of the factors BAT is now able to address with Descartes Routing and Scheduling. In addition, BAT is driving greater efficiencies and cost-savings by using the solution to calculate the potential sales value of individual customers, prospects, and geographies.

"Following the launch of the Descartes solution at our Hungarian facility, we saw immediate results. We reduced our distribution costs, gained greater control over our delivery operations and grew our presence in the Hungarian market," said Carlos Coutinho, Trade Marketing Distribution Director, British American Tobacco Hungary. "The strength of Descartes' offering in combination with their ability to adapt to the tight time constraints we placed upon them demonstrates why the company is considered to be both a market leader and a trusted provider of logistics solutions to businesses worldwide."

"Companies using Descartes Routing and Scheduling typically realize a 10-15% efficiency gain while gaining competitive advantage through improved operations," said Manuel Pietra, Descartes' co-chief executive officer and president. "Focusing on this type of customer value is important to ensuring the delivery of trusted logistics solutions."
