It is self-contained and explains subjects in greater detail than a dictionary. Britannica today announced a dramatically improved version of its Web service for K-12 schools. The redesigned release of Britannica Online School Edition (http://www.new.school.eb.com) is easier and more efficient to use, particularly for young students. Enhancements include an improved atlas, new topical topical /top·i·cal/ (top´i-k'l) pertaining to a particular area, as a topical antiinfective applied to a certain area of the skin and affecting only the area to which it is applied. top·i·cal adj. features, improved search, and three hours of additional video. The service gives students and teachers a rich combination of reference sources and interactive learning tools for the classroom, library and media center. Each of three "reference libraries"--for high school, middle school, and elementary school--now has its own content and home page designed with the intended age group in mind. A third grader, for example, can go directly to the elementary section, with its own encyclopedia encyclopedia, compendium of knowledge, either general (attempting to cover all fields) or specialized (aiming to be comprehensive in a particular field). Each section has a look that's right for the age of the students using it, and teachers and librarians can set any of the three home pages as the default for any computer. "The kid-friendly design really appeals to younger readers," said Britannica senior vice president Patti Ginnis. "Students of every age will find their section really has been created for them.
