DFID quoted on Monday Development Secretary Douglas Alexander as making the announcement at a meeting with business leaders and government officials in Afghanistan.

During the meeting, Alexander announced a partnership for the Afghanistan Investment Climate Facility (AICF) that would aim to raise $100 million for fast-track changes in business rules and regulations to make it attractive for businesses to invest in the conflict-torn country.

In a DFID statement mailed to Pajhwok Afghan News, Alexander was quoted as saying: oTo demonstrate our commitment to fostering economic progress in Afghanistan, I can announce to you today that the United Kingdom will provide u30 million to support the AICF to raise a total of $100 million in partnership with others.AE

The long-term future of Afghanistan - as for all countries - lay in the establishment of a sustainable economy, the visiting secretary said while referring to significant economic progress since 2001.

Alexander stressed: oDevelopment of the private sector is the only way to provide jobs and income for the 65% of the Afghan population who are under 25 years old.

Speaking in Lashkargah during a visit to inspect Britain-backed development projects, Alexander said he was "extraordinarily proud" of British forces and what they had achieved. He insisted the heavy losses experienced by British forces were not in vain vain
