Paul Shimmin, 36, murdered Shoko Kawanobe, 25, in her Yokohama apartment, a court in the city heard. Father-of-four Shimmin, from Bolton, allegedly called police to tell them she was dead and that he did not know how she had died. His lawyers argued she accidentally suffocated with her face in a pillow while asleep but Judge Kenichi Kurita rejected the claim. The judge described the killing as "short-sighted and violent", and said Shimmin had shown no remorse. The killer's family in Bolton declined to comment.
