Bringing equality to Ireland: prime minister Ahern says gays couples deserve greater rights.


Extending greater rights to gay and lesbian couples would be the "Christian" thing to do, said Ireland's Catholic prime minister, Bertie Ahern, in a November 14 interview on Irish state broadcaster RTE (1) See runtime engine.

. Ahern was responding to a lawsuit filed by a lesbian couple who were married in Canada last year. A judge ruled on November 9 that Ann Louise Gilligan and Katherine Zappone could sue for the right to file a joint tax return in their native Ireland. They are reportedly the first same-sex couple to try to have a marriage recognized there.
