Bringing Math to Life.


Math used to be so unrelated to life when I was in school. I scored well in math classes, but I couldn't tell you how to use the math I learned in everyday life.

But to the rescue of today's elementary students is the Everyday Mathematics curriculum based on the University of Chicago Mathematics Project. <http://everydaymath.uchicago.edu/> This project compiled hundreds of interviews with school children, classroom teachers, administrators and others to find out how children learned math. The end result was Everyday Mathematics.

Now school children can have more than one chance throughout their school years to learn a mathematical concept. Now they can learn how to apply mathematical problems in real life. Best of all, Everyday Math rids the classroom of the traditional textbook and rote learning rote learning

When I was in college, I learned more in the dorm hallways about concepts than in the classroom. Why? I learned to use my mind to develop ways to interpret what was visually in my head into words. I learned to work with people to develop the concept further. I learned how to apply learning to real life using critical thinking skills. That is the beauty of Everyday Mathematics and the associated curricula for older students; it allows students to learn with each other and not against each other through a staid staid

More importantly, rote learning fails to apply students in critical thinking skills. Rote learning fails to connect what is done in real life and what is learned in the classroom. In using math, there is more than one way to get an answer.

Math should be fun to learn, and students should be taught how to use math in everyday life.
