Brilliant Digital Ships b3d Studio Tool Suite for 3D Rich Media Web Content Production.Business Editors & High-Tech Industry Writers LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 2001 b3d Studio Software Tools Completes Rigid Testing With Over 1500 Beta Licensees Included Following the successful beta test launched in July 2000, Brilliant Digital Entertainment Inc. (AMEX:BDE), announced the release of the shipping version of its b3d Studio software, rich media production tools. Feedback from the 1500+ beta licensees was obtained from independent animators and production studios whose user experiences and feature requests were incorporated into the shipping version 2.0 of the software. Beta testers included high profile production houses such as MindGel, Mondo Media, Aston Entertainment, Jinx, 3D Mirage and others. The tools will continue to be available as a free trial version. In two weeks the company will launch its new Web site where the full suite of b3d software will be available for purchase online. "b3d software has the best real-time 3D Web tools we've seen to date. They have a solid production path for developing real-time 3D content for the Web, and they offer top-notch product support," said Eric Chadwick, Senior 3D Engineer at Mondo Media. b3d authoring tools allow artists, modelers and animators to create sophisticated animation for the Internet. By allowing artists to use industry standard modeling and animation packages such as 3ds max(TM) by Autodesk's (NASD:ADSK) Discreet and Maya by Silicon Graphics' (NASD:SGI) Alias|Wavefront, Brilliant's(TM) tools tap into a wide range of talented developers looking for a means to put their 3D content on the Web. Models and animation clips from these packages can be imported into b3d Studio where they are edited using a familiar visual editing timeline to create projects quickly and efficiently. Brilliant's patent-pending geometry, animation and streaming technology is then applied to quickly and easily output the project as highly compressed files ready for placement on a Web server. Brilliant will significantly increase the exposure of b3d Studio to a broader base of animation professionals when it releases a compatible version of its b3d Exporter software for Alias|Wavefront's popular Maya animation package in April 2001. "The industry's top animation studios are using Maya to produce award-winning long form character animations and 3D content. Now, with the imminent release of the b3d Exporter plug-in for Maya, our customers will have a simple and powerful solution for creation and delivery of high-quality streaming animations to viewers across the Web," said Mike Wilson, Director of the Maya Interactive Group at Alias|Wavefront. b3d tools have been used in-house for the past 3 years in conjunction with Discreet's best selling 3ds max animation software, to produce Brilliant's 3D animated Multipath Movie series, and more recently, to produce Brilliant Animated Music (BAM) videos, and Brilliant Banners (animated 3D rich-media banner ads). b3d Studio software continues Brilliant's tradition of support for Discreet's customers by providing updated connectivity for Discreet's newly released version of 3ds max 4.0. "The vast majority of the Internet's professional 3D content is done with Discreet's 3D tools, and it is solutions like Brilliant Digital's that combine compelling technology with artistic workflow, and makes 3ds max the constant choice of interactive artists," said Phillip Miller, Senior Director of Discreet software products. "It's easy to see the meaningful integration of b3d tools with 3ds max stems from the large number of high quality productions Brilliant routinely produces with 3ds max." b3d Studio is initially targeted to animators, but the software offers many additional features that will appeal to typical Web developers who presently use Macromedia's (NASD:MACR) Flash and are looking to develop more advanced content. The b3d Studio software is augmented by technology relationships with LIPSinc and Voxware. Brilliant is working with such partners as Motek, Digimask, Face2Face, Virtools, Worlds.com and 3Dion to make it easier for a broader range of Web developers to create high-end animation for the Web. b3d Studio and b3d Exporters are available as both paid and free trial version downloads. The free trial version contains all the functionality of the paid version, but adds a "b3d watermark" over animations produced by the product. Upgrading to the paid version of the software allows non-watermarked content to be created. "Artists and production houses tell us they love our simple 'one-time purchase, no streaming license fee' policy," said Anthony Rose, CTO at Brilliant. "Many Web 3D content creation tools come with complex per-stream licensing costs, making it hard for companies to predict their serving costs. "Our authoring tools have no licensing fees -- after buying the tools you're free to create unlimited content and place that content on unlimited Web sites. And best of all, the b3d files produced by our tools can be served from any Web server, with no additional server software required." "We are focused on building a demand for content production in the music and advertising industries, our targeted business development activity is beginning to pay dividends. Brilliant is working closely with leading studios and licensees of b3d Studio to both build close working relationships and to help these companies participate in the rapidly growing demand for online music videos and Brilliant's rich-media banner ads," said Kathy Brunette, Director of Sales. Content produced by the b3d tools is played using the Digital Projector, a free 550KB download. The Projector's modular architecture allows animation to be played inside a Web page or in a resizable pop-up viewer with channels, customizable skin and optional revenue-generating banner ads that are displayed during playback of b3d content. The Digital Projector is a one-time download. Due to Brilliant's smart installation technology, viewers never need to leave the site to 'get the plug-in' -- simply click on any content you want to play and the Projector is automatically installed. Their installation technology even allows the Projector to be installed from within a banner ad space, allowing viewers to click to see enhanced rich-media versions of GIF banner ads, even if they don't already have the Projector.
