Brill's encyclopedia of China.9789004168633 Brill's encyclopedia of China. Ed. by Daniel Leese. BRILL 2009 1110 pages $388.00 Hardcover Handbook of Oriental studies; section 4; v.20 DS755 This impressive and accessible reference (first published in German in 2003), contains A-Z entries on the culture, society, politics, history, geography, external relations, law, economy, and industry of China. A sampling of the entries on art, literature, language, and religion includes mythology, Mohism, popular religion, writing system, and film, with lengthy overview articles included on the major religions of Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Rather than including articles on specific political events, or specific people, broader entries discuss such events and figures in context, as for example, in the lengthy entry on the military. International relations is an important theme, with several entries on other countries describing their relationship with China. Typical for this publisher, the encyclopedia is fastidious in its organization, and features the use of arrows and italics to indicate cross-references within the text. A glossary of Chinese personal names, and indexes of persons, subjects, and places are provided. The entries were written by specialists in Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia. Leese is at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany. ([c]2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR) |
