TYNESIDE will be lit up tonight to welcome 2009.

Attractions at Newcastle's New Year celebrations include a fire engine that breathes fire, a pedal-powered airship and a musical ice cream van An ice cream van (British) or ice cream truck (American) is a commercial vehicle which serves as a travelling retail outlet for ice cream, usually during the summer. , as 20 illuminated art cars, called Glowmobiles, take to the streets as part of the New-castleGateshead Winter Festival.

The cars were due to begin arriving at Grey's Monument in Newcastle at midday, before a parade to St Mary's Place at 5.30pm.

Spectators were being encouraged to illuminate themselves with glowing badges, hats, glow sticks or even whole costumes for a glowing finale at 6pm, including a 10-minute fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.
