LCC OSPIRG kicks off term's campaigns

The Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group of Lane Community College will hold a public meeting today to kick off this term's campaigns.

Campaigns will center on cleaning the polluted Willamette River, raising money for Lane County's hungry and homeless and lowering the cost of textbooks for college students. OSPIRG interns, LCC student volunteers, faculty and others are invited to take part.

The gathering will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in LCC's Center Building, Room 8. For more information, call 463-5166.

Florence residents can get rid of hazardous items

FLORENCE - The City of Florence will hold a free household hazardous waste disposal event later this week at the Florence Recycling Station, 2820 Rhododendron Drive.

Lane County's Special Waste Team will accept waste from western Lane and Douglas counties from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Hazardous wastes include fluorescent light bulbs, mercury thermometers, cleaners, paint thinners, cameras, hearing aids, cell phones, power tool batteries, fertilizers and auto fluids.

Businesses that wish to participate should register in advance by calling 682-4120.

Sustainable business

topic of City Club meeting

Bob Doppelt will discuss sustainable business Friday at the meeting of the City Club of Eugene. Doppelt is director of the University of Oregon Center for Watershed and Community Health and author of "Leading Change Toward Sustainability: A Change Management Guide for Business, Government and Civil Society."

The meeting will be held at 11:50 a.m. at the Eugene Hilton, 66 E. Sixth Ave. Lunch is optional.

Doppelt will be available at a second meeting at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday at Cafe Paradiso, 115 W. Broadway.

'Jail and Bail' event

to benefit March of Dimes 

SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield area Jail and Bail event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Original Roadhouse Grill, 3108 Gateway St.

The event involves the mock arrest of Springfield residents, who will receive one-hour sentences. "Prisoners" must then raise bail in the form of contributions to the March of Dimes.

Volunteers are needed to be arrested, and to help with the event. For more information, call 686-2170.

Red Cross to train

disaster volunteers

The South Coast District of the American Red Cross will sponsor a series of training classes in November, December and January.

Designed to give participants the knowledge and skills to become Red Cross disaster volunteers, class topics will include introduction to disaster services (required for all other disaster classes), damage assessment, shelter operations and shelter simulations.

The courses are free and require registration 48 hours in advance.
