Springfield police chief in serious condition

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield Police Chief Jerry Smith Jerry Smith may refer to the following people:

 was listed in serious condition at McKenzie-Willamette Hospital on Saturday after undergoing surgery for a gastroenterological disorder.

Smith was admitted to the hospital on Monday and was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit. On Friday, his condition was upgraded to serious and he was transferred to the surgical floor for further treatment.

Man who died in crash identified by police

CORRECTION (ran 10/29/03): The age of a survivor in a fatal traffic crash was incorrect in a news brief published Sunday on page C3 because of a police error. Rex Garner of Springfield is 26. He was the passenger in a car driven by Bryan L. Chastain, 32, who died in the crash at Deerhorn Road and Highway 126.

WALTERVILLE - A Eugene man who was killed when his car collided with a tractor-trailer rig Friday night was identified Saturday as 32-year-old Bryan L. Chastain.

Oregon State Police said Chastain was driving north on Deerhorn Road shortly before 7 p.m. when he ran a stop sign at Highway 126 and his BMW BMW

McMINNVILLE - The American Civil Liberties Union American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), nonpartisan organization devoted to the preservation and extension of the basic rights set forth in the U.S. Constitution.  is urging Oregonians to back Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden in a challenge to parts of the Patriot Act that also is drawing some Republican support.

``We have an administration that seems to view our Constitution as an obstacle to justice rather than a path to justice,'' Jann Carson of the ACLU of Oregon said.

Carson criticized the Patriot Act during a public meeting in McMinnville on the Bush administration's war on terrorism Terrorist acts and the threat of Terrorism have occupied the various law enforcement agencies in the U.S. government for many years. The Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, as amended by the usa patriot act .

The act turns 2 years old this weekend amid signs of growing and diverse opposition. Three states and nearly 200 cities have approved resolutions urging Congress to repeal all or parts of the law.
