Police evacuated the area and called in the department's bomb squad, which X-rayed the bag and found no explosives inside.

The investigation continued Friday.

Mail carriers to hold

annual food drive

Letter carriers will be collecting food for the hungry today as part of the National Association of Letter Carriers The National Association of Letter Carriers (or NALC) is a labor union for employees of the United States Postal Service who serve as letter carriers (informally, "mail carriers", "mailmen", or "postmen", although many are now in fact female).  Food Drive.

Nonperishable food donations left by mailboxes will be delivered to FOOD for Lane County by Crosstown Movers.

The annual event is the largest single-day food drive in the nation.

Police continue probe

of identity theft gang

ROSEBURG - Roseburg police are investigating a widespread identity theft and forgery ring that has resulted in a dozen arrests, with more expected.

The ring was discovered last month with the arrests of several suspected forgers on unrelated warrants, police said.

Additional arrests followed. Police also seized four computers and other evidence, including counterfeit checks, bills and identification cards.

Police say they believe the group, working loosely together, stole mail, created fake ID cards, forged stolen checks, created counterfeit checks and changed victims' accounts through computer and wire transfers.
