With musty smell gone, library set to celebrate

"I don't smell it anymore!"

That phrase is music to Sheldon Branch Library Manager Michael McCarthy's ears, and he's been hearing it regularly since the Coburg Road library reopened in mid-April after a three-month hiatus to eliminate a musty smell.

This Saturday, the staff will thank patrons for their patience with a celebration that includes a performance by folk singer Walker T. Ryan at 10:15 a.m. and refreshments served throughout the day.

The library closed in January after water seeping through the concrete slab Concrete slab

smell. A contractor removed the carpet, ground off the surface concrete, treated the remaining surface for mold, then sealed it to prevent future seepage, McCarthy said. New carpeting replaced the old.

The cost: $39,945. The property owners will pay up to $12,000, a city official said.

The library at 1566 Coburg Road is open from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. It's closed on Sundays and Mondays. For more information, call 682-5778.
