"At first we just did wholesale, selling our Fetish fetish (fĕt`ĭsh), inanimate object believed to possess some magical power. I couldn't believe it the day in 1994 when they told me that Donatella Versace Donatella Versace (born May 2, 1955) is an affluent Italian fashion designer, like her famous brother, Gianni Versace, the founder of the Versace clothing empire. Her current title is Vice-President of the Versace Group and Chief Designer of the fashion line.  had just bought about $3,000 worth of our pieces. That really exploded the line.

"You can never think that something's always going to work, because it's an up-and-down kind of ride. Last year we were really expanding rapidly, and we had 32 seamstresses. Now it's down to 18 or so.

"We opened up our retail store in November of 1997. I'd always said I wanted a store and I was looking at spaces, but we were just too small for Sunset Plaza or on Beverly. So we went down to West Melrose.

"It's been a challenge learning how to merchandise retail, because I'd been doing wholesale for so long. Wholesalers aren't so ready to take risks. The store customers are more adventurous. "For me fabric is a passion. We buy fabrics from European suppliers at shows in New York. This year I saw some hand-loomed wool, and we're now going to go into sweaters and knitwear, which we never did before, using things like cashmere cashmere

. When you see these amazing fabrics you try and find a way to make clothes from them, even if it's expensive. When you have a quality fabric then you're one step closer to a quality garment."
