You gotta love Sheila Nicholls simply for the opening couplet couplet

Two successive lines of verse. A couplet is marked usually by rhythmic correspondence, rhyme, or the inclusion of a self-contained utterance. Couplets may be independent poems, but they usually function as parts of other verse forms, such as the Shakespearean sonnet,
on her album: "Friends for a long time / But I think that we shouldn't fuck / Friends for a long time / Baby, you don't want to see the rest of me." You certainly want to hear the rest of this very satisfying solo debut, Brief Strop (don't ask me what that means), from the England-born, Los Angeles-based, out lesbian singer-songwriter-piano pounder. She's a little bit Ani, a little bit Fiona, a bit Tori, but mostly a whole lotta Sheila--making music that's impassioned and political, with wide-ranging melodies to match her girlish girl·ish

(I hereby deem Nicholls a spiritual granddaughter of Laura Nyro Laura Nyro (born Laura Nigro) (October 18, 1947 – April 8, 1997) was an American composer, lyricist, singer and pianist. Her style was a distinctive hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, mixed with elements of jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, show tunes and rock. .) While she's distributed by a mainstream label (Hollywood Records) and has a cut ("Fallen For You") on a hot movie sound track (High Fidelity), Nicholls earns her indie stripes by recording for her own Essex-Girl label.
