Bridgwater College Rolls Out NCD Thinfrastructure to 12,000 Students Running Microsoft Windows 2000.

Network Computing Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq:NCDI), a leading supplier of thin client information access and management products, today announced that Bridgwater College has selected an NCD Thinfrastructure solution for its thin client hardware and software requirements. The college was impressed by the manageability, features and scalability of the NCD solution, which will result in a lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

"We could have spent twice as much doing exactly the same thing," comments David Foster, IT manager at Bridgwater College. With the initial roll out now complete, in record time, Foster offers his 12,000+ students diskless workstations, with multimedia capabilities, running Microsoft Office 2000. Because the terminals are robust, resilient and remotely managed (with NCD ThinPATH Manager software), no support is required on the ground. Also any support that is necessary can be provided remotely from the computing helpdesk.

Bridgwater has bought 175 NCD ThinSTAR Windows-based terminals and NCD ThinPATH software that includes NCD ThinPATH Manager, ThinPATH Plus and ThinPATH Desktop Mirror. The ThinSTARs have been used to replace old redundant PCs in computer classrooms, the library, the 'Learning Resource Centre,' staff workrooms, the computing help desk and for college administration and enrolments.

Last year, during the summer holidays, Bridgwater College upgraded its RM Connect network based on Microsoft Windows NT4 and PCs running Windows 95. "We have always been server-centric and didn't make the mistake of seeing Microsoft as just another application provider," maintains Foster. "We had real problems maintaining so many PCs with hard disks in classrooms and in the offices. This got worse as our applications got more complicated and became a real strain on the support staff," he continued.

The college had tested Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition (TSE) at one of its outreach centres in Minehead and was impressed, but it lacked certain features. It then looked into Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Terminal Services.

"We knew thin client was a good solution, but weren't sure if what we had was right for us in terms of scalability. This turned us on to NCD because not only did they offer the thin client hardware, they also offered a suite of software to ease management and significantly reduce our TCO. The use of load balancing software was an essential part of our strategy of organizing servers in farms and providing fault tolerance," commented Foster. "We may eventually replace the majority of our PCs with NCD ThinSTARs," he concluded.
