Bridge collapses in Karachi, killing at least 4

At least four people were killed and several more injured Saturday in a bridge collapse in the Pakistan port metropolis of Karachi, according to a television news report.

The death toll was expected to rise, as another 20-25 people were believed to be still trapped under the debris, GEO TV reported, citing witnesses.

A portion of Northern Bypass Bridge, located at Paracha Chowk in the Sher Shah area of Karachi, collapsed around noon, the report said.

Eyewitnesses were quoted as saying that when the incident occurred, a trailer was passing over the bridge along with a number of small vehicles. The trailer, a police car, a minibus and several other vehicles are said to be trapped under the rubble.

President Gen. Pervez Musharraf had just weeks ago inaugurated the bridge, which was touted as a blessing for Karachi citizens weary of traffic congestion in Pakistan's largest city. It was erected by an army-related construction group.
