Bridge Router Links Branch and Corporate Offices.

ORLAND PARK, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 1995--Andrew Corp. introduces RouteLynx(TM), a low-cost, high performance, remote bridge/router that seamlessly integrates remote office computing resources into corporate networks.

Basic support of most popular LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and WAN protocols gives users flexibility in connecting new and existing remote sites with central office networks.

FEATURES/BENEFITS

LAN/WAN LAN/WAN Local Area Network/Wide Area Network  multiprotocol acceptance -- RouteLynx is equipped with three WAN ports and an Ethernet port. With three WAN ports, users can connect multiple sites within one box. The ports can also be used to create fail-safe redundancy and provide for dial-on-demand.

Software Configurable WAN ports -- WAN ports can be configured as RS-232, RS-422, RS-485 or V.35 interfaces for user flexibility.

Simple Upgrades provide faster data rates -- The RouteLynx WAN ports support data rates of 64 Kbps. To increase supported WAN link speeds, an optional software upgrade is available to increase throughput to an aggregate rate of T1/E1 (2.048 Mbps).

Supports common LAN protocols -- IP and IPX are supported using a choice of WAN link layer or network-layer protocols (PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using , HDLC (High-level Data Link Control) A data link protocol from ISO for point-to-point communications over serial links. Derived from IBM's SDLC protocol, HDLC has been the basis for numerous protocols including X.25, ISDN, T1, SS7, GSM, CDPD, PPP and others.  and Frame Relay) for data transport.

Transparent bridging -- All LAN protocols, including SNA, APPC (Advanced Program-to-Program Communications) A high-level protocol from IBM that allows one program to interact with another across the network. It supports client/server and distributed computing by providing a common programming interface on all IBM platforms.  and NetBIOS, can be bridged. Spanning Tree Algorithm An algorithm used in transparent bridges that dynamically determines the best path from source to destination. It avoids bridge loops (two or more paths linking one segment to another), which can cause the bridges to misinterpret results.  (IEEE 802.1d) is also fully supported.

Fully manageable -- Simple management is achieved with Andrew's PC-based management program, LynxMan, or a standard SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  Manager system.

Built in PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card.  slot -- Allows for easy loading of additional applications from PCMCIA program cards.

RouteLynx is versatile in its applications. It can be used as a point-to-point remote bridge, a central site router and a private multipath network link. In addition, RouteLynx is fully compatible with central-site bridge routers from Andrew and other manufacturers. RouteLynx is available directly from Andrew or from Andrew Business Partners. The list price is $1,595.
