Bridal-related stocks jump on news of Princess Sayako's engagement.


TOKYO, Nov. 15 Kyodo

Bridal-related stocks drew active buying Monday on investor expectations that demand for wedding products and services will increase following reports that Princess Sayako is set to marry a Tokyo metropolitan government employee.

Shares of Watabe Wedding, Japan's largest wedding firm engaged in rental and sales of dresses for wedding ceremonies, gained 35 yen to 2,835 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Tokyo Stock Exchange

, while Tasaki Shinju, which mainly produces and sells pearls, jumped 27 yen to 416 yen.

''Such shares drew buying on speculation that demand for bridal-related business will increase in the next several months stirred by the happy reports,'' said Tsuyoshi Segawa, an equity strategist at Shinko Securities Co.

On Sunday, a senior Imperial Household Agency The Imperial Household Agency (宮内庁 Kunaichō  official said the 35-year-old princess, who is the only daughter of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, will marry 39-year-old Yoshiki Kuroda Yoshiki Kuroda (黒田慶樹; Kuroda Yoshiki b. April 17, 1965 Tokyo) is an urban planner for the Tokyo metropolitan government. On November 15, 2005, he married the Japanese royal Princess Sayako, at which point Sayako left the Japanese Imperial Family. .

Among other shares that gained were those of department stores, including Mitsukoshi and Isetan, on speculation that demand for wedding-related items will rise, brokers said.

Mitsukoshi ended the session up 15 yen at 510 yen, while Isetan rose 40 yen to 1,242 yen.
