Brickmaking plant to be mothballed during downturn; in association with RBS.


A BRICKMAKING plant in County Durham “Durham county” redirects here. For other uses, see Durham County.

County Durham is a county in north-east England. It can be used to refer to 4 different entities:
  • the historic County of Durham
  • the administrative county of Durham
 is to be mothballed with the vast majority of its staff set to be laid off as the downturn in the housing industry affects ancillary trades.

Consultations on redundancies have begun with 27 of the 33 staff at the Eldon brick plant, near Bishop Auckland Bishop Auckland (ôk`lənd), town (1991 pop. 23,560), Durham, NE England, on the Wear River. It is a busy market area, and the town's industries include textiles and engineering. , which is owned by the world's largest brick-making company Wienerberger.

A spokesman for the company said the plant was being mothballed and its intention was to keep six staff on until an upturn in housebuilding meant it could be reopened.

He said: "Our actions are in response to the downturn in new house building and we intend to reopen it when the housing market recovers."

The Eldon brick works a place where bricks are made.

The plan to mothball the plant comes as brick production across the UK is set to drop to its lowest level since the 1940s. Wienberger shed 71 jobs at a plant in Kidderminster with a further two plants in Devon and Surrey also being mothballed.

Ibstock, a major UK brickmaker, says it is closing factories in Merseyside and Kent.
