Brian Cowen's singing skills are already a big hit on the internet.

A video of the premier in full voice at last weekend's homecoming celebrations has already been viewed more than 1,000 times since it was uploaded to the You Tube website by a fan two days ago.

Mr Cowen is seen singing a five-verse ballad about his late father Ber in front of a cheering crowd of thousands in his native Clara, Co Offaly.

Ber Cowen died in 1984 and Brian later won his seat in the Dail and has kept it in the family since then.

In the singing tribute the Taoiseach is flanked by his wife Mary and his daughters Sinead and Maedhbh under a giant banner: "Welcome Home Taoiseach."

After making two false starts on the song in the three-minute video, Mr Cowen is heard to joke about TV cameras.

He said: "That's the problem with perfectionists Perfectionists: see Noyes, John Humphrey.  running the public broadcasting public broadcasting: see broadcasting.  system. They never make a mistake themselves."
