Shares in the Edinburgh-based firm, which makes John Smith's bitter and Newcastle Brown Ale Newcastle Brown Ale is a brand of dark brown ale. It has been brewed in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, since April 1927 by Newcastle Breweries (now a part of Scottish and Newcastle). In August 2005, Scottish and Newcastle closed the Tyne Brewery. , rose 2% after rumours that the US group would trump the pounds 7.8 billion offer from Carlsberg and Heineken. There was speculation that SABMiller was plotting an 850p share offer, valuing S&N at more than pounds 8.2 billion.
