It has a similar history and tradition to beer brewed in the rest of the British Isles. Though the region is famous for beers from the likes of Brains or the Rhymney Brewery, The Celt Experience is the only one where all the ingredients are grown in Wales. These include hops grown in the Aber Valley, near Caerphilly Caerphilly (kīrfĭl`ē, kär–), Welsh Caerffili, town (1981 pop. 42,376) and county borough, 108 sq mi (279 sq km), S Wales. , and malt from Ceredigion. "I have a passion for Welsh products and believe that as a nation of beer producers we can be up there as some of the best in the world," he said. "However, to produce the ultimate in this country is to use home grown ingredients. "Using Welsh malt and Welsh hops is something that many brewers would consider as a big commercial no-no. "However, the closer we have looked at weather patterns in the region the more viable the idea has become - well it has now happened." Tom said that despite the rainy climate around the Aber Valley, there was enough sunshine to encourage him to try to produce a pure Welsh beer. The two pubs will both debut the beer on Hallowe'en weekend and Tom is sure that it will be a success. "It is fair to say that this is massive in terms of Welsh ale enthusiasts, and I honestly expect the beers to be sold in the first night they are put on," he said. "Due to the demand and limited supply for this first run, we will only offer each person half a pint to ensure all people have a taste." But with more planting next year, Tom's hop project should be able to produce 100 barrels for 2010 - that's nearly 30,000 pints. The Wheatsheaf in Llantrisant will be hosting the Celtic New Year Festival on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31. The bubbles shot up like tracer bullets through the lively, daffodil gold ale, giving a thick, creamy white head and a ripe, fruity aroma. A sudden tilt to the tongue revealed a sharp, citrus tang with hints of spices. My lips smacked eagerly for the next gulp as the dry, parching after-taste took hold. All too soon, it was gone. There was only one answer - another golden Celt Experience. The beer with a volcano in every bottle. CAPTION(S): Tom Newman is set to launch the first 100% Welsh beer, The Celt Experience |
