Breivik 'barred' by European anti-Islamist Facebook group.

Summary: Anders Breivik reportedly tried to join a fringe European anti-Islamist lobby Facebook group but was 'barred'

Anders Behring Breivik, the man accused of a combined bomb and gun attack in Norway on Friday, reportedly tried to join a fringe European anti-Islamist lobby group on the social networking site over a year ago, but apparently was turned away.

Anders Gravers, founder of Stop Islamisation of Europe, said Breivik had made the application around 18 months ago, but another member had checked Breivik's Facebook friends which included one person who used a picture of Danish neo-Nazi leader Jonni Hansen as his profile picture.

"He advised us not to allow this guy to join or be able to post on the Facebook wall," said co-founder Stephen Gash.

The group, was founded by Gravers and Gash in 2007 describing itself as an alliance "with the single aim of preventing Islam becoming a dominant political force in Europe."

Breivik said in an Internet posting back in December 2009 that he had had discussions with the group, but Gravers admitted his organisation had no record of this.

"He has never been in contact with us and he has never given us any advice," but he said it was possible Breivik had attended one of its demonstrations.

The group held its first demonstration in 2007 in Brussels on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York, despite authorities banning the event.
