sustainable building practices

Knowing that you're doing right by Mother Earth is now as easy as opening a paint can. But not just any paint can.

The Horizon line of zero-VOC interior and low-VOC exterior, paint from Rodda Paint, Portland, Ore., is the only complete line of paints to earn certification from Green Seal(R) the national organization that certifies high-performing products that are environmentally responsible.

"Demand for our Horizon paint has increased as our customers become more conscious of using products that are environmentally responsible and meet their performance needs," says Tom Braden, president of Rodda Paint. "We took the extra step of gaining Green Seal certification to help our customers. We want them to have peace of mind that their paint choice meets the highest environmental standards available." Horizon paints are odor free, are 99.6 percent free of solvent, and contain virtually no polluting pol·lute

Rodda is industry leader in gaining Green Seal certification

In gaining this designation, Rodda Paint also becomes the first paint manufacturer in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  to offer a full line of interior and exterior paints and primers that definitively qualify for credit under the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED(TM)) program of the U.S. Green Building Council. Most public buildings and many private commercial buildings seek LEED(TM) certification to demonstrate they were built using best practices for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

"More of our clients are becoming interested in gaining LEED(TM) certification as we're able to demonstrate operating efficiencies, particularly for energy and water savings," says Christopher Dixon, director of specification for Mithun Architects, Seattle, Wash. "But meeting LEED(TM) standards can be a complicated process. It's a lot easier for a designer if we can just fill in the blank with a product name to demonstrate that we have earned that LEED(TM) point."

Green Seal-certified products must demonstrate that they perform at least as well as conventional products. For paint, this performance is measured in durability, range of colors not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed.

Above and beyond these standards, Horizon paints contain a highly effective mold- & mildewcide that makes the exterior finishes particularly well suited to the wet climate of the Pacific Northwest, and the interior finishes well-suited to high humidity areas, such as bathrooms, kitchens and basements.

Green is good business

"We believe that green is good for both the environment and for our business," says Braden. "There's a strong environmental ethic here in the Northwest, and the building industry has led the nation in adopting sustainable building practices. It was important to us to provide our customers with products that support their values."

Rodda Paint Company is a founding member of The Oregon Natural Step Network, a statewide group that supports businesses and organizations can reduce their impact on the environment while enhancing their overall efficiency and effectiveness.

Earning Green Seal certification requires a thorough review of technical data and test results to ensure that the products comply with Green Seal's environmental standards. "Consumers rely on the Green Seal as evidence that a product has been evaluated by an independent third party and certified to be environmentally responsible," says Mark Petruzzi, VP of Certification for Green Seal. "Companies like Rodda Paint make significant investments of time and resources into our process because they believe in the future of sustainability and the benefits it can bring to their communities."

Rodda Paint first introduced Horizon flat latex latex, emulsion of a polymer (e.g., rubber) in water (see colloid). Natural latexes are produced by a number of plants, are usually white in color, and often contain, in addition to rubber, various gums, oils, and waxes.  wall paint in 1995. The line now includes 42 different products in all finishes for interior, exterior and priming applications. The exterior paints are low-VOC, mold and mildew mildew, name for certain fungi and protists, for the diseases they cause in various crops, and for the discoloration (and sometimes the weakening and disintegration) they cause in such materials as leather, fabrics, and paper.  resistant, and 100% acrylic acrylic, artificial fiber made from a special group of vinyl compounds, primarily acrylonitrile. Acrylic fibers are thermoplastic (i.e., soften when heated, reharden upon cooling), have low moisture regain, are low in density, and can be made into bulky fabrics. . The interior Horizon lines contains virtually no VOCs. It is odor free, and mold and mildew resistant. Since their introduction in 1996, sales of Horizon paint have grown to more than 15,000 gallons per year.
