This book is a treasure! Breastfeeding Annual International! is a compilation book of many studies and reports about breastfeeding that were released earlier in the year. The book is divided into five sections, plus appendices. Dia Michels has done a great job categoriziing the topics for easy reference.

Topics include Getting Started (with chapters covering helping the mom, the critical first few days, and storing and handling breastmilk); Matters for Moms (with chapters covering sex and benefits of breastfeeding for moms); Breastfeeding in the Real World (with chapters covering work, employees, the law, and an extensive chapter on the WIC WIC - WAN Interface Card  program); Parenting Issues (with chapters covering attachment parenting Attachment parenting, a phrase coined by pediatrician William Sears,[1] is a parenting philosophy based on the principles of the attachment theory in developmental psychology. , weaning weaning,
n the period of transition from breast feeding to eating solid foods.

, and nightfeeding); and Special Circumstances special circumstances n. in criminal cases, particularly homicides, actions of the accused or the situation under which the crime was committed for which state statutes allow or require imposition of a more severe punishment.  (with chapters covering prematurity, nursing adopted children, medications, and costs of breastfeeding).

The appendices include detailed information about costs of breastfeeding versus bottlefeeding and lactation consultants. It also provides a resource list and current legislation information. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney introduces the book with her thoughts on legislation and what needs to be done.

Perhaps my favorite chapter was about proper occlusion occlusion /oc·clu·sion/ (o-kloo´zhun)

, or tooth growth, in breastfed babies versus bottlefed babies. I learned that because the palette is malleable, a soft breast rather than a hard nipple nipple - Trackpoint  from a bottle, helps for proper tooth growth. I have copied that article and given it to my children's dentist hoping that they start to ask moms if they breastfed their children.

Another chapter discusses the benefits of extended breastfeeding. It discusses how the makeup of breastmilk changes as the baby grows. But, it goes further, indicating that at about 18 to 24 months, the immunological properties in the milk are similar to what they are at two months postpartum. I have referred to this information with my clients as well as during my breastfeeding session in my classes when we talk about the benefits of breastfeeding. Parents have been consistently surprised at this information.

This book is easy to read in its entirety and just as easy to use as a reference. There is a wealth of information contained in one volume. I highly recommend it to anyone teaching or advocating for breastfeeding.
