Breast Cancer Continues to Be No. 1 Specific Health Concern Among Women.

Women's health is the effect of gender on disease and health that encompasses a broad range of biological and psychosocial issues.
 Issues Survey revealing that among specific diseases, women are still most concerned about breast cancer (17%), with heart disease following as a close second (14%). Interestingly, almost half the group (49%) listed "overall fitness" as the most important issue when queried about their physical health concerns.

In addition, reflecting the power of the purse The power of the purse is the ability of one group to manipulate and control the actions of another group by withholding funding, or putting stipulations on the use of funds. The power of the purse can be used positively (e.g. , 42 percent said they either "strongly agree" or "somewhat agree" that they "make a conscious decision to purchase products from those companies that support women's health issues."

With respect to investing, 75 percent of the women surveyed responded that they were likely to invest their own money in companies which are known to be socially responsible. Yet only 8percent said they buy stock in companies involved with women's health issues and just 7 percent said they buy the companies' corporate bonds.

"Women are clearly positioned to positively affect companies' activities," said Mindy S. Ross, Director of Target Marketing at Salomon Smith Barney. "With an overwhelming majority indicating their likelihood to invest, and yet with a comparatively small percentage presently doing so, there exists a tremendous untapped potential in the women's marketplace to increase corporate support of these issues." In responding to other questions specifically related to breast cancer, 67 percent of those surveyed had heard of The Race for the Cure(R). Among the companies mentioned by the respondents for supporting women's causes, those involved with breast cancer had the highest level of awareness. These include Revlon, Estee Lauder and Avon.

Salomon Smith Barney, a corporate sponsor of The National Race for the Cure, surveyed approximately 600 women nationwide between the ages of 25 and 50 from May 28-31. Of these women, 86 percent completed college and 40 percent completed a post-graduate education.
