Breakthrough research helps improve artificial heart valve design.

By analyzing different valve alternatives as an integral part of the design process, heart valve manufacturers will be able to reduce their product development time. In addition, the research team's work in verifying, optimizing, and improving heart valve implants can lead manufacturers to new designs that more closely follow the natural operation of the human heart.

The Sheffield team is "working to bridge the divide between theoretical means of measuring the operation of artificial implants and actual performance in the living patient," explained a key researcher, Dr. Rodney Hose, lecturer in medical physics and clinical engineering in the university's Medical Physics Department. "In the longer term, the prospects are even more exciting. It should eventually be possible to use analysis software to model complex moving and elastic/viscoelastic tissue, and therefore to produce an accurate analysis of the prosthetic valve in its final operating environment."

In addition, the team hopes that its work using ANSYS/FLOTRAN(TM) will help designers and manufacturers improve valve designs that avoid blood flow problems so patients will not need the lifelong anticoagulation drug therapy which is costly and can cause side effects.

The Sheffield team's milestones will impact manufacturers in the medical industry, providing valuable information that will lead to better designed products. Combined, these efforts result in improved quality of life for cardiac patients."
