Breaking in on Broadway: Karla Garcia hot foots it to the big time.

With five years of auditioning for Broadway behind her, Karla Garcia attributes her first great success to two things: a relaxed mentality and a great outfit. "It's a mental game, so I told myself it's not life or death, only another audition. Plus I had this jacket that flew around when I danced. It helped me be seen, and just made me feel funky funky - Said of something that functions, but in a slightly strange, klugey way. It does the job and would be difficult to change, so its obvious non-optimality is left alone. Often used to describe interfaces. ," says Garcia.

one semester before she is supposed graduate to launch her professional career. Last October she won a spot in the dance ensemble A group of dancers preforming under a common name: the dance equivalent of a band. Examples would be Riverdance and Shuvani.  of the new musical Hott Feett, based on the music of Earth, Wind & Fire, that is scheduled to open on Broadway in April.

Garcia believes growing up in the competition circuit helped her learn how to stand out from the other 300 girls at this audition. "I've learned the difference between looking with your eyes and actually having something behind them," she says. "It's the difference between just making eye contact with someone, or telling a story with your eyes. Exuding an internal confidence and energy can capture an audience." She also makes it a point to ask a question while learning the audition combination so that "the choreographer cho·re·o·graph

will see me even before we dance."

Though she believes a calm confidence improved her performance at this audition, she strongly warns against being too carefree. With one digit of her telephone number mistyped on her resume, Garcia didn't find out she had been asked to the second callback An authentication technique that calls the sender back. After connection is made, the receiving side breaks the connection and calls the sender to ensure that the logon was made from the authorized computer. Callback prevents a stolen ID and password from being used on a different machine.  until she read it in an e-mail after the callback was already over. "I was going crazy because I got the callback. But then I thought, wait, I missed it!" recalls Garcia. Luckily enough, choreographer Maurice Hines Maurice Hines (born 1943) is an American actor, director, jazz singer and choreographer.

Born in New York City, Hines began his career at the age of five, studying tap dance at the Henry LeTang Dance Studio in Manhattan.
was so impressed by her dancing that she was hired anyway. Now, Garcia only hopes she can live up to the high expectations she set in her audition. Though she fears Hines' technically challenging choreography might take a toll on her body, she's determined to "enjoy the process and have fun."
