, noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the driveway of a house he owns that is located next to his own home. The residence had been burglarized in the past, so McCarroll grabbed a flashlight, armed himself with a handgun, and went to investigate.

When he flashed a light into the dwelling, a stranger (later identified as Arthor McNeil) bolted past him and jumped into the parked car.
