Brazil orders another satellite from Hughes.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 1995--With two new satellites in orbit and rapidly filling with customers, Brazil's national telephone company has ordered another spacecraft from Hughes Space and Communications International, Inc. (HSCI HSCI Harvard Stem Cell Institute

), a unit of Hughes Space and Communications Company Communications Company is a communications unit of the United States Marine Corps. They are part of Combat Logistics Regiment 37 , 3rd Marine Logistics Group (3MLG) and III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF). The unit is based out of the Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. .

The $70 million agreement was signed this month between EMBRATEL, of Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, city, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro (rē`ō də zhänā`rō, Port. rē` thĭ zhənĕē`r
, and Hughes, of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . The satellite is an HS 376W model, similar to the Brasilsat B-1 and B-2 spacecraft now in orbit. Brasilsat B-3A, as it is known, is due to be launched in late 1997 on an Ariane rocket from neighboring French Guiana French Guiana (gēăn`ə, –än`–), Fr. La Guyane française, officially Department of Guiana, French overseas department (2005 est. pop. .

This order is an amendment to the Brasilsat B contract with Hughes signed in 1990, which gave EMBRATEL options for additional spacecraft. Like the others, Brasilsat B-3A will be a general communications satellite, carrying voice, data, business networks and television over 28 C-band transponders. Hughes will again split the ground station engineering work with Promon Engenharia SA of Sao Paulo.

Unlike the others, however, Brasilsat B-3A will not have an X-band payload for government use. Like B-1 and B-2, this satellite will have one C-band beam for national service, and a second C-band regional beam that will focus higher power on the major urban areas. The B-3A satellite design will be optimized for the C-band only payload, providing nearly 20 percent higher signal power and over 12 years of mission life.

"We're happy to have EMBRATEL back as a customer," said Frank Taormina, president of HSCI. "EMBRATEL prudently invested in long-lead parts during construction of B-1 and B-2, which enables it to have a new satellite built in about 20 months."

Brasilsat B-3A is the 50th satellite ordered in Hughes' popular HS 376 family of spinning spacecraft. All three Brasilsat B satellites are wide-body models. The B-1 satellite was launched by Ariane Aug. 10, 1994. B-2 was launched, also on Ariane, on March 28, 1995.

Hughes Space and Communications Company, a unit of Hughes Electronics Corporation of Los Angeles, is the world's leading manufacturer of commercial communications satellites, having built more than 40 percent of those in operation.
