The harvesting procedure itself may be illegal, including using corrupt means to gain access to forests; extraction without permission or from a protected area; the cutting of  ring in Mato Grosso Mato Grosso (mä`t grô`s) [Port.,=thick forest], state (1996 pop.  state. Arrests include illegal loggers and corrupt officials working at the government's environmental protection institution in charge of protecting the environment. Authorities were seeking to question well over 100 people and at press time had made scores of arrests.
