Braxter P. Irby, Jr., MD: incoming president of SMA.


The Southern Medical Association is pleased to announce the installation of Braxter P. Irby, Jr., MD as President during the 99th Annual Scientific Assembly in San Antonio in November. He will serve his term during the organization's centennial year in 2006.

He did his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC) is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Located in Jackson, Mississippi (USA), it houses the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Health Related Professions, and Graduate Studies in the Health , and subsequently received his training in Nephrology and dialysis under the celebrated nephrologist Dr. John Bower, Professor Emeritus of Medicine, UMMC. Dr. Irby's career has involved two years as a physician with the United States Army United States Army

Dr. Irby has held outstanding positions of leadership and has received numerous honors throughout his career. Not only was he selected for membership in Alpha Omega Alpha The Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, commonly called Alpha Omega Alpha and abbreviated AΩA or AOA, is the national honor society for Allopathic medicine in the United States; Sigma Sigma Phi, abbreviated "SSP", is the honor society of Osteopathic , the honor medical society, but has served as that organization's president. He has also served as Chief of Staff for King's Daughters Medical Center King's Daughters Medical Center is located in Ashland, Kentucky and is the city's largest employer at over 3,400, generating $155 million in payroll a year.[1] It is a locally controlled not-for-profit 385-bed hospital that offers "cardiac, medical, surgical, paediatric,  in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and currently serves on its Board of Directors. He served on the Medical Advisory Board of Renal Care Group, one of the nation's largest dialysis providers, from 2000-2004.

Dr. Irby became a member of the Southern Medical Association in 1985. During his time with the Association, he has served on a number of committees and has represented the SMA in two previous leadership roles. He served as Associate Councilor for Mississippi from 1994-1999 and then was elected Councilor from that state for 1999-2004. He has also served the SMA on the Coordinating Committee on Education, the Advisory Committee on Management Compensation, the Coordinating Committee on Long Range Planning To comply with Wikipedia's , the introduction of this article needs a complete rewrite. , the Coordinating Committee on Administration and Budget and was Chairman of the Coordinating Committee on Membership.

Dr. Irby has served as President-elect of the SMA since November 2004, and is a member of the Executive Committee. He is a member and both past and present financial supporter of The Society of 1906, which supports the Research and Education Endowment Fund.

Dr. Irby founded and is President of Southwest Mississippi Nephrology, PLLC in Brookhaven. He is currently serving as Medical Director of Renal Care Group dialysis units in Hazlehurst, Brookhaven, McComb and Centreville, Mississippi. He and his wife Melissa reside in Brookhaven. The Irbys enjoy traveling, golf, fine dining and are wine enthusiasts.
