Oh dear, what a popularist viewpoint Cllr Michna attempted to express in his letter regarding the recent demolition of the CSI CSI Crime Scene Investigator

 building, the Acklam Hotel, and the former Odeon O`de´on

Instead of grasping the possibilities presented by these newly released "sites" for the future, he concentrates on the "comfort loss" of their occupation to our living memory landscape.

The CSI building was a vacated church that, luckily, was occupied by engineers who sought to provide a lecture theatre and library for their professional interests. After a decline in demand, it then became a computer showroom, and latterly a training centre.

At this point it was put back on the market, and nobody wanted it!

The Odeon was built (like scores of other art-deco edifices), to cater for the need to watch movies in the 1930s. Later, television and video came along, and then even later multiplex cinemas. The Odeon cinema, now out-gunned, became a nightclub, and failed!

The Acklam Hotel had the "catchment catch·ment

a. A structure, such as a basin or reservoir, used for collecting or draining water.

" area for which it was built demolished, under a post war plan for better housing - no doubt benefiting us all. Only the brewery owners kept it going, until the point at which it became untenable and then they sold it. Private enterprise tried to revitalise it, and failed!

So when, and at which point, does Cllr Michna decide that we all need to move on? Or does private enterprise need to continually invest in defunct, tired structures? We have a "new frontier New Frontier
