Brave Mary's last farewell.

Hundreds of mourners are likely to pay their last respects to pensioner Mary Richardson.

Great-grandmother Mary made front page news in July when she was found unconscious at her bungalow in Shiremoor, North Tyneside, after a brutal assault which shocked the community.

She was taken to North Tyneside Hospital following the attack. Her condition slowly deteriorated and she died at the weekend of pneumonia. The funeral will be held at St Mark's Church in Brenkley Avenue, Shiremoor, on Tuesday. The times are to be confirmed.

Her son Arthur said: "It is very sad but we knew it was only a matter of time. She was up and about and quite active in the last few days before she died but then she took a turn for the worse.

 but my sister thought a lot of people would want to come to pay their respects so we decided to have a church service where she lived.

"We are glad she isn't suffering any more but it has made us all wonder how long she would have lasted if it had not happened."

Her story touched thousands of readers who continued to send cards and donations to the hospital. Harry Marsden, who helped to raise hundreds of pounds, said: "It is a terrible shame. This sort of thing shouldn't happen to anyone let alone an elderly person.

Young boxers at Harry's gym organised a charity run to raise money and show the pensioner they were thinking of her. Many are expected to attend Saturday's funeral.

Mary was born in Earsdon, North Tyneside, and lived all her life in the borough.

She moved to her bungalow in 1992 shortly after her husband died. She leaves behind three children, Karyn Dickman, Ken Weddle and Arthur.
