Brant Announces Formation of White Birch Paper Company; Transaction Brings Three Leading Newsprint Mills Under Common Ownership.


GREENWICH, Conn. -- Industry veteran Peter M. Brant brant or brant goose, common name for a species of wild sea goose. The American brant, Branta bernicla, breeds in the Arctic and winters along the Atlantic coast.  yesterday announced the formation of White Birch Paper Company (the "Company") and the closing of a related transaction that brings three leading newsprint mills under the Company's ownership.

The Company now owns the Bear Island mill located in Ashland, Virginia Ashland is a town located just north of Richmond in Hanover County, Virginia. The population was 6,619 at the 2000 census. Ashland is home to Randolph-Macon College (1830). "The Center of the Universe" is a popular thematic phrase displayed on signs in the town. ; the Soucy mill in Riviere-du-Loup, Canada; and the Stadacona mill in Quebec City, Canada. The mills were previously owned by entities affiliated with Mr. Brant. In connection with the closing, the Company acquired the interests of several long-standing partners, including Joseph Allen Joseph Allen may refer to:

The Company's mills will produce over one million tons of newsprint, directory paper and paperboard in addition to lumber and related products. Commenting on the transaction, Mr. Brant noted, "This was an exciting opportunity to bring our mills under common ownership. Our new corporate structure will enable us to continue to serve our customers for years to come."

The Company is owned by Peter Brant, Michael Fuchs and Aby Rosen.
