Brandjam: Humanizing Brands Through Emotional Design.

Brandjam: Humanizing Brands Through Emotional Design, by Marc Gobe. Allworth Press/319 pp./$24.95 (hb).

Current calculations suggest that the average American is exposed to anywhere between 300 and 3000 advertising messages per day, and while it is difficult to agree on a figure, all agree that we are a country over-saturated with ads. As a result (and in an attempt to preserve our sanity), we are getting better at tuning much of it out. This trend has not gone unnoticed by manufacturers and, until recently, their response has been to yell louder, post even bigger view-blocking ads, and spend even more money trying to push their products on consumers.

In his book, Brandjam: Humanizing Brands Through Emotional Design, Marc Gobe, an industry insider and, quite frankly, cheerleader, calls for an end to the relentless dumping of advertising tonnage, advocating more effective promotion through what he terms "emotional branding." Gobe details his concept while noting that consumers have grown more sophisticated and that some of the most successful brands spend a fraction of the amount on advertising of their less successful competitors. He contemplates this paradox asking, "Is it the advertising community losing their punch or the product [they are] offering that has no punch at all?" The answer seems to be a bit of both.

For the skeptic, this book is a revealing look at the inner workings and potential future of branding. For those in need of marketing savvy for themselves or their organizations, it offers many examples of the good, the bad, and the advertising ugly that may spark new ideas "New Ideas" is the debut single by Scottish New Wave/Indie Rock act The Dykeenies. It was first released as a Double A-side with "Will It Happen Tonight?" on July 17, 2006. The band also recorded a video for the track. . In a culture where advertising is unlikely to go away, perhaps the best that we can hope for is the smart, engaging promotion of more innovative products, not just the relentless flogging of substandard ones.
