Brain-scan study links mental math to eye motions.

Byline: ANI

Washington, May 9 (ANI): A brain-scan study conducted by French scientists has linked mental math to eye motions.

The researchers used a computer program to record brain activity when participants were looking left or right, and then predicted when the subjects were mentally adding or subtracting based on their brain activity.

They observed that while performing addition, the participants triggered the same patterns of brain activity that light up when they looked right, and when they did subtraction subtraction, fundamental operation of arithmetic; the inverse of addition. If a and b are real numbers (see number), then the number ab is that number (called the difference) which when added to b (the subtractor) equals , the left-looking brain patterns activated activated

a state of being more than usually active. In biological systems this is usually brought about by chemical or electrical means. Commonly said of pharmaceutical and chemical products.
.

Studies conducted in the past have shown that numbers and space perception are closely linked in the brain.

Study leader Andre Knops, from the French health organization INSERM INSERM Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (French Institute of Health and Medical Research)  in Gif-sur-Yvette, said that the new study could help explain the reason behind that association.

He further said that the research might also lead to better ways of teaching math in schools.

"Teachers could emphasize the link between numbers and space by making use of spatial relations Noun 1. spatial relation - the spatial property of a place where or way in which something is situated; "the position of the hands on the clock"; "he specified the spatial relations of every piece of furniture on the stage"
