This work explains the mechanisms of cell death and survival underlying brain hypoxia and ischemia, exploring both mammalian and invertebrate models. Chapters address specific questions such as the role of glutamate/NMDA, the mechanisms of penumbral cells, the importance of intermittent hypoxia, and gene regulation under stressful conditions. Differences in hypoxia and ischemia across development are also examined. Chapters are in sections on ion channels, transporters, and excitotoxicity; and reactive oxygen species, and gene expression to behavior. Contributors are affiliated with universities and hospitals in the US. The readership for the book includes neuroscientists, clinicians, and medical/graduate students in basic research and clinical practice. Haddad is affiliated with the University of California-San Diego, and with Rady Children's Hospital. Yu is affiliated with Emory University.
