Subsequent to the 9/11 disaster, NYC Local Law 26 was passed to improve emergency evacuation For other uses, see Evacuation.

Emergency evacuation is the movement of persons from a dangerous place due to the threat or occurrence of a disastrous event. Examples are the evacuation of a building due to a bomb threat or fire and the evacuation of a district because of a
 safety and requires that all Class E commercial properties 75-feet or taller have emergency evacuation stairwells retrofitted with photoluminescent markings and signage by July 1, 2006. The law affects more than 1,500 commercial properties in New York City.

To earn MEA Division approval and individual MEA product numbers, all photoluminescent products are independently tested to certify compliance with specific characteristics, including brightness, washability, toxicity, and flame retardance.

BradyGlo(TM) products are designed to identify stairwells, stair steps, exits and doors, floor pathways, handrails, and landings.
