At last night's meeting, Selectmen James B. Stanton and Roger W. Deal approved the appointment of Joseph Connelly as interim town administrator. Mr. Connelly left his position as interim superintendent of the Boylston-Berlin Regional School District June 30. "This takes a little pressure off," said Mr. Stanton. The board has been searching for a replacement since November and has interviewed five candidates. "We're being very selective," explained Mr. Stanton. "We are requiring previous municipal experience, which is limiting the number of qualified candidates." "Sue (Olsen) knows everything about the position, and we don't want to be training someone new for the first year," said Mr. Stanton. "We want someone to come in and start tackling things right away." "Right now, we are in a situation where there are more positions than qualified people," he said. Ms. Olsen, who has worked for the town for 16 years, had intended to retire in April. Since then, she has worked two days a week, instead of four. "Sue has been trying to fit 50 hours of work into 15," explained Mr. Stanton, "and that's not fair to her." Mr. Connelly seems like a good fit for the position, at least temporarily, said the Boylston selectmen. His experience was instrumental in hammering out a balanced budget Balanced budget A budget in which the income equals expenditure. "It is important that Joe knows the folks in town and has had a positive impact on the town," said Mr. Deal. "Although he's never had municipal experience, he certainly has had management responsibilities as superintendent." Mr. Connelly is set to begin work Aug. 4 on what Mr. Stanton expects to be a six-month contract with the option of continuing it if necessary.
