Mr. Martin pleaded guilty yesterday in Worcester Superior Court to related charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (hot water), assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury and assault with intent to maim maim v. to inflict a serious bodily injury, including mutilation or any harm which limits the victim's ability to function physically. Originally, in English Common Law it meant to cut off or permanently cripple a bodily member like an arm, leg, hand, or foot. .

His court-appointed lawyer, Kelli Porges, asked Judge James R. Lemire to postpone sentencing until Sept. 28 so a psychological evaluation of Mr. Martin that is being done as an aid to sentencing could be completed. Judge Lemire granted the request and released Mr. Martin on previously posted bail of $25,000 cash.

Assistant District Attorney Anthony J. Marotta said police went to the Fitchburg apartment after one of the couple's roommates called 911 to report that the child had been injured in·jure

Mr. Marotta said the 2-year-old was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester suffering from first-degree and second-degree burns second-degree burn

The assistant district attorney said Mr. Martin's confession came after a representative of the child protection clinic at UMass Memorial Medical Center told Detective James Gilbert that the pattern of the child's burns suggested the injuries were intentionally inflicted and the detective then confronted Mr. Martin with that information.

Ms. Farnum, 19, has pleaded not guilty to charges of reckless endangerment of a child and being an accessory, after the fact, to assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury. Her case also has been continued to Sept. 28.
