This story examines the effects of WW I on Xavier Bird, a one-legged, morphine-addicted Canadian Cree ex-soldier, as he is met at the train station by his only living relative, his Aunt Niska, a medicine woman who keeps to the old ways and lives in the forest. As Niska and Xavier travel home by canoe canoe (kən`), long, narrow watercraft with sharp ends originally used by most peoples. , Auntie tells Xavier stories of her early life. His reminiscences always involve his best friend, Elijah Whiskeyjack. While Xavier's exploits went almost unnoticed, his comrade was promoted and given a medal. Both became snipers and approached the task in differing ways. Only Xavier returned from the war. This is a first-rate production; Ramirez's and Phimister's semi-voiced narrations are excellent.
