One, Niska, is an elderly medicine woman who lives in the forest. The other is her nephew Xavier, who has just returned from the brutality of trench warfare trench warfare. Although trenches were used in ancient and medieval warfare, in the American Civil War, and in the Russo-Japanese War (1904–5), they did not become important until World War I. in France and Belgium. The third main character is Elijah, a childhood friend of Xavier's, who becomes hopelessly addicted ad·dict·ed adj. 1. Physiologically or psychologically dependent on a habit-forming substance. 2. Ramirez and Phimister read with such purity and sincerity that the listener truly imagines two Crees telling the story The sentences are often short, poetic and beautifully descriptive.
