CLAYTON, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 2001

Gail B. Cooper, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Bros BROS Brothers
BROS Benefits and Retirement Operations Section (King County, Washington)
BROS Barnes and Richmond Operatic Society (London, UK)
. Transportation Inc. (Nasdaq/SmallCap: BOYD), today announced management promotions intended to strengthen the Company's operations. The first of these involves the creation of a new position of Chief Operating Officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Company. In its new management alignment, Richard C. Bailey (age 50), who is currently Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Company's Board of Directors, will assume this additional role.

"As a member of our management team for nine years, and with tremendous practical knowledge of our business and industry, Richard Bailey presents excellent credentials and capabilities in assuming this new leadership position and directing the operations of Boyd Bros. Transportation," Cooper commented. "We have created this new position within our management structure to tap his operational skills and experience, which extend far beyond the financial arena, and we expect that his more direct involvement in Boyd Bros.' daily operations will allow me, as Chief Executive Officer, to focus additional time and attention on the strategic opportunities and issues facing our Company today. We are delighted to see Richard continue his advancement through the Company and we welcome his expanded contributions to our ongoing growth and development."

Adding his thoughts to the management changes, Bailey said, "I am excited to be a part of the team working to take Boyd Bros. to new levels of performance and capabilities. Over the past year, under Gail's leadership, we have put together a tremendous management team that has made basic philosophical changes in many areas of the Company. Realizing that the old management ways and methods do not work well today, our team has transformed this Company's management style by incorporating a philosophy that encourages our employees to work smarter and try new ideas "New Ideas" is the debut single by Scottish New Wave/Indie Rock act The Dykeenies. It was first released as a Double A-side with "Will It Happen Tonight?" on July 17, 2006. The band also recorded a video for the track. . To support this philosophy, we are giving employees increased freedom and resources - including substantially more training for our non-driver staff - to accomplish greater things for their own personal development and satisfaction, to improve the services we provide for our customers, and to strive toward the greater potential that we all see for Boyd Bros. Transportation. I'm particularly proud of the turnaround at our Welborn subsidiary under the leadership of Steven Rumsey and Rendy Taylor, and I think overall this Company has accomplished a lot considering the weak economic and freight environment we face. I think these changes are now beginning to be seen in our improving operating performance, and I look forward to working alongside Gail and the Company's other senior executives to build on this positive momentum."
