His mother, Tracey, saw an article about a young boy, also from Somerset, who went to the US for a revolutionary operation at the Children's Hospital, in St Louis, Missouri. She contacted the hospital and three weeks later the operation, known as a selective dorsal rhizotomy Dorsal rhizotomy A surgical procedure that cuts nerve roots to reduce spasticity in affected muscles. The family raised the money themselves for the pounds 40,000 operation -which is routinely performed in America, but not in Britain - and Lewis underwent surgery on July 21. The procedure involves cutting nerves in the spine, which relaxes the legs. Lewis can now walk with crutches without stumbling, and should be able to walk unaided in a year. Tracey Evans, said: "Lewis is going to walk me down the aisle. It's been his incentive all along. "The operation has changed his life." |
