Boy takes unloaded BB gun onto bus.

Byline: Rebecca Nolan The Register-Guard

A 10-year-old boy who brought his brother's unloaded BB gun onto a school bus Thursday to impress some friends caused a brief scare at Bertha ber·tha

The boy carried the realistic-looking, handgun-shaped BB gun onto the bus Thursday morning in his backpack, Eugene School District Eugene School District (4J) is a public school district in the U.S. state of Oregon. It serves the city of Eugene Elementary schools

 spokesman Kelly McIver said.

Other students on the bus overheard the boy talking about the BB gun with a friend, and several told an adult when they arrived at school at 770 Calvin Road.

School officials called police, who searched the boy's backpack and found the unloaded BB gun inside. The boy did not have any BB pellets, Eugene police spokeswoman Kerry Delf said. Although he did show the BB gun to a friend, he did not brandish bran·dish

Police spoke with the boy and his parents. Investigators believe the incident was a case of bad judgment on the boy's part, not a "school violence situation," Delf said.

She said the timing was unfortunate, given Monday's massacre at Virginia Tech, where troubled student Cho Seung-Hui shot and killed 33 people, including himself.

Holt Principal Kevin Boling sent a letter home to parents Thursday explaining the situation and praising the students who reported the incident to school employees.

"After investigating, we don't believe that the item was brought with any intent to threaten or harm anyone, but to `impress' peers,' Boling wrote.

He urged parents to make sure children don't have access to anything that could be considered a weapon.
