Boy is savaged by pit bull dog; Six-year-old suffers broken arm and bites.

A YOUNG boy was seriously ill in hospital today after being savaged by a pit bull terrier pit bull terrier

Dog breed developed in 19th-century Britain for fighting other dogs in pits. It was created by crossing the bulldog (which at the time was longer-legged and more agile) with a terrier, possibly the fox terrier.

Six-year-old Jamie Picken suffered a broken arm and multiple bites to his legs and arms in the attack which happened in Winson Green Winson Green is a loosely-defined area in the west of the city of Birmingham, England. It is part of the ward of Soho.

It is the location of HM Prison Birmingham (known locally as Winson Green Prison or "the Green") and City Hospital (formerly Dudley Road Hospital).

The dog ran off as passers-by came to Jamie's rescue after being alerted by his screams in Heath Green Road, yesterday afternoon.

They tried to comfort the boy until paramedics arrived. Doctors at nearby City Hospital were put on alert for the Jamie's arrival as paramedics continued to treat him en route.

Jamie, who lives in Winson Green was immediately taken into theatre for emergency surgery on several serious wounds.

 said the boy was understandably "very frightened".

The paramedic, Mandy Clark, said: "There was a large crowd at the scene when we arrived.

"We did not see the animal that had attacked him and we are not clear about what led to the attack, but the youngster had suffered a number of serious injuries.

"He had multiple bite marks to his legs and arms and his left arm appeared broken.

"The patient was understandably very frightened by what had happened.

"We quickly started dressing the wounds before taking him on blue lights to City Hospital.

"We understand the lad was taken to theatre very soon after arrival at the hospital for surgery to his wounds."

The incident happened shortly before 4pm.

Today, housewife Shanaz Bi, aged 38, who lives in Heath Green Road, said she was the cousin of the owner of the 18-month-old blue nose pit bull which attacked Jamie.

She said: "I feel really bad about it, as Jamie was like my son.

"When I got here, I could see that his arm looked like it was broken. He had also been bitten on his arms and legs."

Police said two youths had been arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail. The dog was also seized.
